Best View of the Susquehanna in York County? Highpoint Scenic Vista
The best easy view of the Susquehanna in York County is Highpoint Scenic Vista and Recreation Area, a 79-acre county park at 1199 Hilt Road, Wrightsville, in Lower Windsor Township. A half-mile paved trail climbs 154 feet to a 772-foot summit with a 360-degree view of the river, Wrightsville and Columbia.
I have photographed a lot of York County from the air, and this is the one place where the ground view competes with the drone. The three photos below are from the vista looking south, looking north toward the Route 30 and Route 462 bridges, and straight down on the path that winds up the hill.
What is Highpoint Scenic Vista?
It is one of eleven York County parks, created in 2007 on 79 acres of open meadow on a hilltop above the river. There is no forest to block the view, which is the point. The county's own numbers: the parking lot sits at 618 feet above sea level, the vista at 772 feet, so the walk up gains 154 feet. It is not a mountain, and it is not the highest ground in the county; it is a hill in exactly the right spot. The Mason-Dixon Trail, a 196-mile long-distance route, passes through the park on blue-blazed posts.
What can you see from the top?
The Susquehanna in both directions, the boroughs of Wrightsville and Columbia, and the bridges between them. Looking north you see the 1930 Route 462 bridge and the Route 30 bridge; looking south the river widens toward the Lake Clarke pool. The county has put a QR code on the marker at the summit that links to an interpretive site explaining the history in the view.
What are the trails like?
There are four, and none is hard.
- Heritage Trail: half a mile, ADA gravel surface, stroller and wheelchair friendly, stone benches along the way, open to walking, biking and horseback riding. It starts at the lot and ends at the vista.
- Lower Meadow Trail: half a mile of mowed grass with two sitting areas.
- East Meadow Trail: half a mile of mowed grass.
- Mason-Dixon Trail: the through-hiking route, marked with blue blazes.
Parking, hours and rules
The lot is off Hilt Road with ADA parking, one ADA restroom and canopy picnic tables. Like all York County parks it is open dawn to dusk. Dogs must be leashed. Motor vehicles stay in the lot. Drones are allowed in the county's designated areas, and this park is one of them, under FAA rules. From Route 30 take the Wrightsville exit to Route 462, go south on Cool Springs Road 0.7 mile through the light, left on Knights View Road for 0.9 mile, then left on Hilt Road; the lot is on the right. The county says about ten minutes from Route 30.
Who does this park matter to?
Anyone buying in Wrightsville, Hellam Township or Lower Windsor Township. Eastern York School District had a $315,000 median sale price for January through August 2026, and this park, the river towns and the Route 30 commute to Lancaster are a large part of why people pick it.

Questions people ask
Is Highpoint the highest point in York County?
No. The summit is 772 feet above sea level. The view is good because the hill stands alone above the river, not because it is tall.
Can I bring a stroller or wheelchair?
Yes. The Heritage Trail to the vista is a half-mile ADA gravel path with a gentle grade and benches.
Does it cost anything?
The county lists no admission fee for its parks. Parking is at the lot on Hilt Road.
